Whether you live in an apartment or an older house, soundproofing your floors does wonders for keeping your neighbors and the rest of your household happy. Read our guide below to learn about the best ways to soundproof your floors. If you’re planning to install new, soundproof flooring in Seattle or the surrounding areas, give Magic Hardwood a call.
Where To Start
There are generally two types of noise that need to be soundproofed in a home: airborne and impact noise. Airborne noise includes people talking, sounds from a TV or stereo, cooking, and even the flushing of a toilet. Impact noise consists of sounds that have contact with the floor, such as footsteps or moving furniture across the floor. When you’re planning which floors to soundproof, start with the areas that make the most noise. These tend to be kids' bedrooms, living rooms, and kitchens. It’s helpful to map out your home to see which rooms or apartments are most affected by noise.
Installing Soundproofing
When you’re installing new floors, choose an underlayment specifically made for soundproofing. The underlayment can be applied directly to the subfloor, then the new flooring can be placed over it. Hardwood, laminate, and ceramic floors require slightly different approaches when placing underlayment, so we recommend hiring a professional to do the job.
Soundproofing existing floors is trickier. Soundproofing can be created from below by adding insulation or a sound barrier through ceiling tiles or adding blow-in insulation into the ceilings. If you’re in a rental and not allowed to change the structure of your home, try adding thick rugs and curtains to muffle sounds. Adding large pieces of upholstered furniture, such as sofas with fluffy throw pillows can also dampen sound.
