Tile flooring can crack due to obvious factors, such as dropping an item directly on it. However, there are a few lesser-known reasons you might not have known, which we explain below. If you need tile repair or installation for your home or business in Seattle or the surrounding areas, give Magic Hardwood a call.
Cracked Under the Weight of a Heavy Object
Most tiles have to comply with weight standards, meaning they can at minimum support an object weighing 250 pounds. More durable tiles can often support up to 400 pounds of solid weight, which is why this is one of the less likely reasons your tile is cracked. Only extremely heavy objects, such as safes, are capable of causing this kind of damage.
Tile Was Installed Over a Control Joint
Since all concrete will eventually crack, control joints are used so that the cracks happen in predictable areas and can accommodate for when concrete expands or shrinks during temperature fluctuations. Control joints tend to create straight, rather than jagged cracks. If tile was placed along a control joint, there is a high chance of the tile cracking.
Concrete Layer Did Not Properly Cure
When installing flooring, freshly poured concrete requires time to cure. Because the concrete is full of water, it requires enough time to let the water evaporate, which will in turn cause the concrete to shrink. Twenty-eight days is the recommended waiting period to allow concrete to completely cure. If tile is installed over the concrete before it is fully cured, the likelihood of cracks is high.
