Rain, salt, and snow can do a number on hardwood floors during the winter. Follow our tips below to keep yours in good shape this season. When you need new flooring or refinishing in Seattle or the surrounding areas, contact Magic Hardwood and we can make it happen.
The best way to save your floors this winter is to keep harmful substances such as snow, ice, and salt, away from your floors. If nearby streets have been salted or de-iced, the particles in them can stick to your shoes and scratch your hardwood. Soggy shoes can even damage the floor’s finish. When you’re at home, it’s best to remove your shoes once you’re inside. But sometimes that isn’t always possible, especially in an office setting. When you can’t have everyone remove their shoes, place mats at all of the entrances that lead outside to decrease the amount of outside residue people bring in.
Don’t Be Alarmed by Gaps
Since hardwood floors are porous, you may notice gaps between floorboards during winter. This is because the floorboards actually shrink due to the drop in humidity. This is generally no cause for concern, and you can expect the gaps to return to normal once the weather warms up in the spring. If the sight of gaps is truly bothersome, you can use a furnace or humidifier to increase your home’s humidity. Another option for preventing gaps is to install laminate hardwood flooring instead. While it resembles hardwood, laminate is less likely to move during seasonal changes.
